Essay on Intuition

ENSAYO SOBRE LA INTUICIÓN       Otra idea muy estúpida que encuentro común a mucha gente es que el hecho y la intuición son idénticos. En otras palabras, se sostiene ampliamente que el poeta que crea, el mercader o el diplomático que manipulan y la dama de alta sociedad que juega con los sentimientos de los hombres, hacen uso de la misma facultad. Un frenólogo diría que es esa la facultad de la naturaleza humana. El error es perdonable, pero sigue siendo un error. Una consideración más minuciosa nos mostrará la diferencia. La facultad creativa del carácter (del poeta) está compuesta de imaginación e introspección; un poeta es egoísta, construye otros de sí mismo. Falstaff es Shakespeare tan verdaderamente como Pudita, Iago, Othello y Desdémona son Shakespeare.       Las grandes mentes conocen a la humanidad a través del conocimiento de sí mismas, mientras las pequeñas mentes precisan tener la experiencia de conocer hombres.       Considerando profundamente la existencia, no podemos más que aceptar, fuera del hecho de que vivimos, casi nada más puede saberse. Recorremos un laberinto tan intrincado que se nos excusará preguntar si existimos. Es cierto, tal vez lo más lejos que pueda alcanzar el pensamiento son estas líneas de Shakespeare:       Somos de la materia       de que están hechos los sueños, y nuestra corta vida       con un sueño acabará.       Mientras más profundo va el pensamiento, más desgarra nuestro corazón la evidencia de la extrañeza de la vida. Somos seres de la intuición y si sabemos es porque sabemos que sabemos. Ni un millón de Haeckels podrían rebatir esto.	ESSAY ON INTUITION       Another very stupid notion that I find common to most people is that fact and intuition are identical. In other words, it is widely held that the poet who creates, the merchant and the diplomat who manoeuvre, the society woman who plays on the feelings of men, make use of the same faculty. A phrenologist will tell you it is the faculty of human-nature. The mistake is excusable, but it is a mistake none the less. A more minute consideration will show to us the difference. The creative faculty of character (of the poet) is composed of imagination and introspection; a poet is selfish, he builds others from himself. Falstaff is Shakespeare as truly as Pudita, Iago, Othello, Desdemona are Shakespeare.       Great minds know mankind through knowledge of themselves, whereas little minds must have experience to know men.       Considering existence deeply, we cannot but allow that, outside the fact that we live, scarcely anything can be known. We wander in such a maze that we may be excused asking if we exist. True, the further thought doth go, are those lines of Shakespeare:       We are such stuff       As dreams are made on, and our little life       Is rounded with a sleep.       The deeper thought goes, the more our hearts are torn as the strangeness of life is evident. We are beings of intuition, and if we know, it is because we know that we know. Not a million Haeckels can contest that.
